On Monday (April 22), the hit BBC crime drama Blue Lights returned for another nail-biting episode.

During the episode, police officers Annie and Shane received a call about a fire.

Annie questioned where the fire service was as the pair approached the burning building.

When they discovered the fire service would take longer than five minutes, the two police officers panicked.

Shane insisted on going inside, while Annie stopped outside and waited for the fire crew to arrive.

However, she was determined to follow him after realising that two people were trapped inside the flames.

In a split-second decision, the brave pair removed their jackets and wrapped them around their noses and mouths before bravely stepping into the flames.

As they got inside, Anne and Shane managed to rescue a mother and son who were upstairs before the house exploded, just before they escaped.

As the dramatic scenes rolled out, fans were baffled, with many taking to social media to question how two police officers could enter a fire without the proper protection.

Taking to X(Twitter), one user penned: "#BlueLights no way are coppers allowed to go into burning buildings like that!!"

"Indeed, and given the temperatures involved, their clothes and hair would be burning,” another person agreed.

A third viewer quipped: "Fire brigade turned up eventually", followed by a confused emoji.

While someone else faulted Shane's technique as he slowly moved up the stairs while his palm rested on the wall.

They said: "You use the back of your hand against the wall in a fire, not your palm #BlueLights."

Siân Brooke branded Belfast in Northern Ireland, where Blue Lights is set, as a "character" in the hit BBC show.

The 44-year-old, who plays Constable Grace Ellis, praised the city and said on the podcast In the Spotlight: "It really is one of the most brilliant cities.

"If people don't know it, you've got this beautiful countryside that rolls into the city, and then the city rolls out to the sea."

The actress added: "To film there is fantastic because you have all this breadth of locations that you can use.

“You can be in the centre of the city doing a car chase in the morning and then out on top of Cave Hill or wherever in the afternoon."

She continued: "I think Belfast itself is a character within the show, and I think it's quite a strong character."

Elsewhere, Blue Lights viewers were taken aback to see Derek Thompson - known for playing long-time character Charlie Fairhead on Casualty - star in the latest episode of the gangland series.

Following his recent surprising exit from the soap, fans of the police drama were left stunned when they tuned in for season two and spotted the actor very much alive and kicking, but this time in a new role as a retired police officer.

PC Robin Graham was introduced at the end of the episode when a trainee solicitor turned up on his doorstep investigating a decades-old case he was involved in.
