One of my latest obsessions has been old family, church or community cookbooks. I have been finding myself drawn towards them, and picking them up whenever I can. These books are so different from the cookbooks I am normally drawn to. There are no pretty pictures, no fun stories or descriptions of the recipes, and no glimpse into the life of the author. But I think that the reason I love them so much is because I know that these are recipes that people have made in their homes.

Check out the video below to see just how easy this Homemade Slurpee Recipe is!

Sure, I trust cookbook authors as well – I mean, they do write recipes for a living. But there is something humble and appealing to recipes that I know are made by people just like me. I find myself imagining what these people were like and where the recipes came from. Did she make up this recipe? Or was it handed down from her mom? Was this the special recipe he would make for his kids on Saturday mornings? Even though I don’t know the actual stories, I love that they are real recipes.

I found myself flipping through the pages of the latest family cookbook that my mom’s side of the family has. (This is the 3rd, and I treasure each of them!!) I found myself marking one recipe after another to try. And then I saw this recipe. A homemade slurpee recipe. For some reason, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. It was so easy, and all you need are 3 ingredients and a blender. 1 minute later, you have a homemade Slurpee. No need to get in the car and drive down to your nearest 7 Eleven. (Not to mention that the only 7 Eleven that is relatively close to me closed awhile back.)

Another thing I really like about this homemade slurpee recipe is that the combinations are endless. I went with a basic cherry Slurpee, with lemon-lime soda and cherry limeaid Kool-Aid. My cousin, who included this recipe in the cookbook, says his favorite combination is red cream soda with Tang powder. Or try pineapple soda with Tang, orange soda with tropical punch, or pretty much any Kool-Aid flavor with lemon-lime soda. This is the perfect treat to enjoy on a hot summer day!

hi what is the English equivalent of kool-aid or tang powder please?

    • Deborah says

I’m not sure what an English alternate would be, or if you have something, sorry! It is just a pre-sweetened drink mix that comes as a powder.

What carbonated drink you use ?

    • Deborah says

You can use any flavor you’d like or that would go well with the type of Kool-Aid you use. I used a lemon-lime soda, like Sprite or 7-Up.

I agree, I am always drawn to my family or neighborhood cookbooks over my popular chef cookbooks because I know those simple family cookbooks have all those tried and true family recipes that I know and trust!

Growing up I used to live next door to a 7-11. Slurpees were “it”. Had one a few months ago and they just tasted different. I’ll have to try these as I bet they are better than what 7-11 is serving now!

Deprived my son on 7/11 slurpees throughout his childhood till he could drive there all by himself. Should have thought of making them myself. These look so vivid in color. Beautiful!

The best part about these is that you actually know what’s going in them. Never can tell with a 7-11!
